A standard sand carved or "sandblasted" sign is hand crafted by a professional sign maker. The typical woods used are redwood and cedar. These woods have been a traditional choice due to a high resistance of decay and the natrual beauty of the wood grain texture.

Another type of material used in a sandblasted sign is HDU (high density urethane) which has been a popular alternative due to its excellent stability, versatile manufacturing options and the fact that it is impervious to termites, dry rot and or decay.
