We have all heard the term “branding”, in many different forms and explanations of what it is. Recently a nearby city has been working on a very public process of what they refer to as a branding process. All the news media and local talk i have personally heard is pushing the idea that just a new city logo will in fact brand the city. This branding process seems to be nothing short of a public contest for a free logo.

All this attention got me to thinking, what is a brand?

To me, a brand is not just a logo, but a presence, a feeling, or better yet, an experience. A logo is just one of many visual aids to be used in a branding process. Taking on a new logo image is not creating a brand, it is creating a recognizable vehicle for a future brand hopefully. The best example at the moment is when you hear the name Coca-Cola®, what was the first thing that came to mind? a polar bear? santa claus? a smile? or the actual logo?  I ask this because when you hear a name like this, it kicks deep in to the small little folds of our minds and triggers a specific response. Whether it is a good or bad response will be determined by the experience we have had when we see, hear, taste, feel or even smell something. This is what creates the true brand in my opinion, the experience.

Adopting a new logo does not magically make you a brand that is easily recognizable, it takes years of work, and hard work at that with tons of research, development and execution. When it comes to branding a company, it is not as simple as holding a contest for logo design, or hitting up the local community college for free design work from beginner students. Trusting your company image to beginners can be costly in the future, hopefully that realization comes early that it is not working, or even worse, that it may be working against you.

The branding process starts with client service, treating clients with respect and at a consistent level will create a good feeling and good start to a brand. The next step would be to start with the visual aids of your up and coming brand. Logo design, business cards, letterheads, envelopes, website design, company apparel, company vehicles, newspaper, social media, radio and internet marketing should all be consistent in the same message. However, in the end, nothing builds a brand better, stronger and faster than word of mouth from satisfied and happy clients.

All these things combined, and the time for them all to settle into your clients minds will develop into the overall company experience, you know, your brand!

Business cards have been around forever it seems, the old standard “Hello” in business meetings.

But have you noticed that they are starting to all look the same, and instead of saying “hello” they are starting to say “blah blah blah”. With all these huge online printing facilities that offer the point and click design for the everyday user, creativity is being lost. Generic clipart is running abundant and everyone has the same choices for a design, and very limited at that. Sure, you may save a few bucks on the actual production costs for the cards, but in reality are these cards hurting your business more than helping? Effective design, eye catching colors, branding your business and products will make people hold onto your card more than the save a few pennies online shops.

A professional designer can change the way people see your business cards, making them hang on to it longer, or better yet, they use it.  After all the most important part about a business card is handing it to someone that will use it to make the call.

I can almost hear you asking yourself, “Does my business card really say Hello?”.
